FAREWELL SPEECH AT THE KUALA LUMPUR BAR-BENCH DINNER

FAREWELL SPEECH AT THE KUALA LUMPUR BAR-BENCH DINNER 2008
RICK’S CAFÉ CASABLANKA, KUALA LUMPUR
17 October 2008
By
Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad
Chief Justice, Malaysia

In the year 2004, I said to the then Chief Justice: I am prepared to retire as a Federal Court Judge. In the year 2006, I said to the then President of the Court of Appeal: Whatever happens, I will never beg.

Today, by the grace of Allah, I don’t retire as a Federal Court Judge. But, today, again by the grace of Allah, I can still say:

  • I had never begged nor lobbied.
  • I had never compromised the independence of the Judiciary while I had always respected the separation of powers.
  • I had done my best and I leave it to the public to judge whether my best is good enough.
  • I might have made mistakes, but I am prepared to stand before my God to be questioned on my honesty.

My wife and I thank you for inviting us to this function. I thank you for your co-operation throughout my service from Magistrate to Chief Justice.

Thank you.
